Coco Canal

It was such a beautiful morning I decided to take my new accessory on a stroll beside the Regents Canal.
Needlepoint Handbag -  eBay USA
Regents Canal at Angel

Me in sunglasses with new bag, two whippets and a jug.
Hmmm... I am reminded of Coco Chanel's advice: " Before you leave the house, look in the mirror and remove one accessory." She's right. The jug will have to go.

Halloween Swag

'Joe! Joe! Where are you going?'
'Halloween.'
'Yes, I know it's Halloween. Are you going trick or treating?'
Scoffs
'Where are you going then?'
'There's a bonfire party.'
'Where did you get those clothes?'
'What clothes?'
'Those clothes you're wearing.'
'Found them.'
'Found them where?'
'Upstairs.'
'Where did you find the white shirt?'
'John's wardrobe.'
'The tie?'
'Daddy's tie box.'
'That's the Christian Dior one isn't it?'
Checks label. 'Yep.'
'The suit?'
'Daddy's wardrobe. It's Alexander McQueen.'
'The glasses?'
'Ed's drawer.'
'The coat?'
Twirls. 'Your room. It was in some tissue paper. Like it?'

Dr No Thanks

Designing 007 - 50 years of Bond Style at The Barbican

I can't think of a more inspired combination! The Barbican and 007 - the stuff my dreams are made of and after a spell in the country just the kind of urban outing that I fancied. The Barbican never disappoints and after dozens of visits I am still moved by the scale and drama of the place - lusting after a flat on the 27th floor with a curved concrete balcony and quietly sighing at every carefully considered period detail.
Sadly the 007 exhibit was padded with the kind of fakery and gimmicks geared to impress children and blokes. Alongside golden guns, diamonds filled briefcases and model cars that turn into submarines, Ken Adam's elegant, dried-up-felt-pen sketches stand out as the most beautiful and desirable objects in the exhibition.

Opulent costumes were inadequately modelled by shapeless grey mannequins made of the kind of bri-nylon used to make Miss Piggy and Kermit. The gold waistcoat worn by Pussy Galore was tantalisingly displayed in a bullet-proof glass case but it turned out to be only a copy of the original. Clips of the best bits of the Bond movies over the last 50 years shown on big screens were popular but with Goldfinger priced at £1.49 on Amazon it seemed like a cheap and easy crowd-pleaser. Still, we had a nice time. Shunning the Bond bar (rigged up indoors and selling only Martini's to 007/Jeremy Clarkson wannabes and their dates) we sat out on the terrace and admired the architecture some more before heading to Mayfair for a spot of window shopping.
Pay £12 to shuffle past these dummies or...

Stella McCartney for Dogs

I haven't REALLY got the Stella McCartney tropical T-shirt: It's 500 quid. So, I'm going to fashion one from these vintage scarves I picked up on Church Street, except my sewing machine's broken and a new one is 500 quid.
I'll have to find some other use for them...

Summer's Around the Corner

Right, I'm all set for summer. Eyes tested and new sunglasses on their way. Floral print silk T-shirt in bag wrapped in tissue. Summer trainers - on feet. Crocus order placed. Hydrangea supports delivered and in position....

... huh hum .... I'm waiting....

Yes, I KNOW it's February

What A Way To Go

My friend Emma sent me this link and said "Blog This... because it's brilliant"
Let's see if she's right...

Needless to say the DVD has already been ordered and dispatched from Amazon and should be here any day...
It's probably terribly un-PC and I hope that's fun-fur that the costume department have used by the acre.
Whatever. I can't wait for it to arrive!!

New Autumn Boots

Thank God it was a bit chilly this morning because I couldn't wait another day to try out my new DMs.
Very dark green actually - Ed wouldn't let me get black.
Brian says they're Prussian Blue with at touch of Veridian. FFS - give it a rest Van Gogh!

Dogs on the Cat Walk

Yasmine Le Bon for Mungo and Maud
I've been in a foul mood ever since this I opened my computer this morning and was greeted by Yasmine Le Bon all set for a stroll around Primrose Hill with her three pint-sized pooches. I'm still in the discarded black leggings that I picked up off the floor at 6.15 this morning, a matted fleece and a sleeveless, puffy Nike jacket of Joe's. Well it was cold and dark when I took Ed to the bus stop, then the front door was left open for ages while a stack of shelving was delivered for the Elle Decoration January Storage Special and by the time I'd made the delivery guys cups of tea the girls from Elle Deco had arrived and I would have looked daft disappearing upstairs and returning five minutes later in an alpaca poncho, white trousers and a pair of perfectly scuffed brown brogues.
Emma called round at about midday for a dog walk. She looked elegant in a dark trench coat and sunglasses. I muttered something about looking a mess as I struggled to fold Capri's slender legs into her aubergine knitted coat and fastened her tasteful black-leather collar around her dainty neck. Hmmm.... think I'll get an overweight, scruffy dog to boost my self-esteem.
Ed caught me browsing pictures of overweight, scruffy dogs on the internet this evening to use on the blog.
'Are we getting another dog??!! Please can we get another dog?'
At that point Brian emerged from his studio, wearing paint spattered overalls and his face smeared in charcoal dust he spoke for the first time all day.
'We are not getting another dog. A man walking two dogs looks like a man walking two dogs. A man walking three dogs looks like a dog walker.'
Ed ignored him.

Here's Madame Pri Pri in her pashmina, posing with other whippets at Rachel's place.
'mummy? daddy? what am I doing here with all these dogs? When are you coming to collect me?'

Debbie Bliss Knits at Lordship Park

Debbie Bliss Luxury Collection photographed at Lordship Park

Debbie Bliss and the gang are here today photographing some of Debbie's gorgeous new knitwear designs. I watch as Debbie starts to unpack; delightful babies booties peek out from tissue paper; sparkling shrugs and gossamer dresses emerge from bags and are hung on rails; intricate cable-knit jumpers are laid over the back of the chaise-longue; exquisite pieces of jewel-coloured swatches, still on the knitting needles are casually placed on the mantle-piece. Everything is so tactile and beautiful. Sigh... And the yarns! Squishy skeins of silk and candy-floss balls of angora as soft as marshmallows tumble from bags onto the table.
I'm itching to knit something.... I'll start with... a scarf maybe. I'm not very good at knitting. When I was seven I knitted my dad a tie. It was bright orange (well it was the 60s), had quite a few dropped stitches and was very, very long. I made him wear it to the advertising agency where he worked.

Here's Ed when he was younger - ahhh - modelling a cosy Debbie Bliss jumper (knitted by Debbie, not me, needless to say).

Topshop Caked in Moss

Topshop Magazine's Autumn Winter story is online here. Photographed at Lordship Park a few weeks ago they've cleverly managed to conjure up the atmosphere of some romantic, semi-derelict mansion - abandoned to the ravages of time and the elements.
Brian! Get the jet-wash out the shed.

Acceptable in the 80s

My friend Emma has just landed herself the role of Lesley in Alan Bennett's Her Big Chance. Written in the 80s, the director is keen that she wears something from the era; not needing to be asked twice to browse for glad rags on eBay, Emma emailed me a piccie of a bikini that she thought would be perfect for Lesley's wardrobe...
... haha! it was only a print that B had designed in our London studio back in 1985!! Before Emma was even BORN!

That got me wondering how many more of our lovely creations were floating around on the internet. I switched off after several million - most of them on US vintage sites and eBay.com. Here are a few of the more tasteful ones -

Hackney to Harley Street

… I’d put a ‘posh’ frock on because Ed and I had an appointment in town. (We had been referred to an Ear Nose and Throat specialist to get a second opinion on Ed’s enlarged tonsil.) However, I sometimes feel that the vintage 60s little black dress and grubby trainer combo gets a little lost in translation when heading West.
The doctor has a consulting room in a magnificent building right on Harley Street. Presenting ourselves to the predictably turned out receptionist - Ed in his disheveled, old-fashioned Italia Conti School uniform and me in what might be construed as some kind of mourning get-up we suddenly felt like a pair of Victorian orphans that had wandered in off the street. Politely turning down her offer to use the lift, we ran excitedly up the grand staircase to the top floor as if arriving at the London residence of our wealthy benefactor.
It’s the same with the Volvo. The poor thing is quite misunderstood in the West End. The battered old estate is perfectly at home here amid the hundreds of other battered old estates (the car of choice amongst the large Hasidic population in the neighbourhood). Drive it into the Congestion Zone and alongside the shiny Minis, cute Fiat 500s and swanky Porsches it takes on the menacing persona of a vehicle from Grand Theft Auto V. Gesticulating cyclists fall by the wayside and pedestrians stepping out to cross the road jump back onto the pavement in fright when they see us coming. Great fun.

BTW - Turns out Ed will grow into his giant tonsil.

Black Swan

It's the hottest day of the year - 29 degrees - and Madam is insisting on wearing her new Black Swan collar. I suggested that black velvet and lace may not be quite the thing for a trot in the blazing sun but she just gave me a disdainful look and stood stubbornly by the door. Never having mastered 'casual' myself, we looked a bit too matchy matchy over the park this morning; her in evening wear and me in a cocktail dress.

Black and Blue

I'm going to say this quietly as I think you might all shout at me but earlier in the week I was quite excited by the autumn chill in the air ..... Yeah, I know it's been a disappointing summer weather wise but however dark, cold, wet and windy it might be, if it's the month of July you can not go to a party wearing a black dress and diamante. Which leaves me stuck because I only really have black party dresses and I love anything sparkly, as you can see. So, tonight I was planning to wear a new, black, wool cocoon-dress from Zara, one or two marcasite brooches, tights!! and gold shoes to Emma's birthday party. Sorted.

One-day heatwave. Damn. I'm sweltering. Trying not to moan about it too much but my dress plans for this evening are scuppered. A quick dash down to Ribbons and Taylor on Church Street.

Sorted. Will wear with white Converse.

Super Saturday

Holly, photographed by John at Lordship Park
John has been working at Strut and Stroll, the two vintage and designer clothes boutiques on Church Street. It's the perfect job for him. Hoana and Tom who own the shops have asked him to take photos for their website and blog, so the other day Holly went down to their new place, Strut on Broadway, at Broadway Market to model all the gorgeous frocks while John took the shots.
On Saturday morning Brian and I dropped him off at the shop at 10.30 ( it's 11 on Sundays! see what I mean about the perfect job?) and had a stroll along the market towards London Fields. We'd never been to Broadway Market before: John said it was 'well hipster', whatever that means but blimey! It was rammed with the coolest twenty somethings, brunching at the caffs before hitting the shops. Down at London Fields the designer dogs were out and Enzo and Capri had a right go at an Italian Greyhound and a pair of Boston Terriers. A small, disused park-keeper's house had been taken over by a party of what looked like Calvin Klein models on their day off, drinking beer in the overgrown garden and dancing on the roof to the coolest, jazzy music. We had a wander round and marvelled at number 25 London Fields; a house we seriously considered buying in 1986. It was an elegant but shabby place back then with a piano factory in the garden. The piano factory didn't put us off but the looming 1930s tenement building next door did. I hardly recognise it now. No. 25 is as pretty as a doll's house and in the dappled shade from the trees, with flowering window boxes and great views across the park the council block must be one of the best addresses in town.
Back at Strut, excited Japanese fashionistas are cooing over the designer dresses and the cool Hoxton crowd, pay-checks fresh in their bank accounts, are getting kitted out for the night's clubbing. This coming Saturday - 3rd September is Super Saturday at Strut Broadway - with free bubbly, helpful assistants and lots of divine clothes and accessories to try on there couldn't be a nicer way shop.

Mosh Pit Sartorialist

Just as Joe gets back from Womad in one piece (well, I say one piece - he lost a horn in the mosh pit).....
...John heads off on a lads holiday to Croatia.

Goodbye Norman Jane

I feel a bit sad that Jane Norman have gone into receivership. They took these pictures here back in the Spring. It was a lovely warm evening when the stylists filled the bay bushes with fairy lights and hung pretty glass jars with flickering candles from the flowering magnolia tree. It was a real party atmosphere in the garden as Ed and I sat watching all the action. Looking back on it, that was probably where he got the glamping idea from... hmmm, I can see all the Conti Kids, dressed up to the nines, reclining on silk cushions passing round plates of Haribos and pretending they're roughing it out in the wilds.

These ones were taken earlier in the day up in the copper bedroom.

And these in the cool, white basement.

Robespierre's Shoes

Oh Lordy!
Back in May...
                                                                                ED

asked for a pair of these lovely, summery, cornflower blue Vans.

                                                                                I
said. 'You'll have to wait 'till your birthday.'

It's his birthday on Friday and yep, you've guessed it, they've sold out EVERYWHERE. Please help me. He thinks he's getting a pair and keeps saying things like 'can't wait 'till I get my baby blue Vans.'
There is a conspiracy between the Vans shop in Carnaby Street and the one in Covent Garden to pretend that they never existed. Vans have removed all evidence of them from their website and all unsold pairs appear to have been destroyed. Brian, an artist :), says this reminds him of the huge painting by David of the leading figures of the French Revolution. A sizeable number of the heroes of 1789 had become the villains of 1792 and had to have their faces painted over. Whatever... Hang on, he's muttering something about 'The past was erased, the erasure was forgotten, the lie became truth.'
' FFS - get on eBay and track some down.'
'They've got these brown ones, or these greyish-brown ones, or these browny-grey ones or these taupe ones.'
'He wants CORNFLOWER BLUE ones.'
There aren't any. All the pretty summer colours are gone, to be replaced by a dreary selection of puddle brown and snail grey shades. I don't have anything against those colours; they're fine for.... I don't know, a painting of grey and taupe whippets on a brown background.

But not for a pair of summer shoes for padding around in Lanzarote.
                                                                     He likes blue.

Peak Times

It's the middle of June, the sky is blue, the birds are singing, the smell of jasmine fills the air and it's pissing down with rain. Where IS it coming from?
Never mind. Only a month to go 'till we head off for our week in Lanzarote. I wonder.... is it a bit previous to go shopping for a swimsuit so far in advance?... I might have lost two stone by mid-July! Oh well, I have a day off so will take my time, wandering around Selfridges swimwear department - they're bound to have a decent selection at this time of year. I have a sort of 1950s style in mind - quite structured and glamourous. Don't want black... or blue. Ooo, but maybe something with a Pucci print in pretty colours; that might be nice. Even a bikini if it's not too weeny. With a spring in my step I arrive at the third floor and glance about for some kind of beachy display. Perhaps a mannequin or two wearing floppy hats and floaty kaftans, a bit of sand, a beach ball? There is no obvious sign of any swimwear at all. Several acres of lingerie but no swimwear. The assistant waves me towards a couple of depleted rails by the toilets. It looks like what's left over from 1987. There is a just-about-passable black thing with a white trim - in a size 8 or a 14, and quite a few black draped arrangements that remind me of window treatments in a funeral parlour. Even Greek widows wouldn't be seen dead in them. Last summer the over 70s in Athens were sporting bright turquoise two-pieces teamed with day-glo orange toenails.

Fenwicks.... I think they have a swimwear department. Not so much a department, as it turns out, more a display up a corner. When I say 'display', there were some swimsuits there, on hangers. They had some Etre ones, simple and quite nice. Not what I had in mind but they had all the colours in all the sizes BECAUSE THEY'RE £299 EACH. We decide to leave Fenwicks to the tumbleweed and head to Liberty's. In womenswear the girl frowned and looked into the distance as if she was searching the darkest depths of her memory to actually remember what a swimsuit was. 'Oh yes' - it finally came to her. 'I think I saw one bikini left, down in the scarf department.'

John Lewis? 'Prepare to be depressed.' I say to Brian as we go up the escalator.
'I am already.' He replies. It was more ghastly than I feared and have wiped it from my memory.

We went to Topshop as a last resort. Only buy a swimsuit from Topshop if you are so perfectly happy with your body just the way it is that you would be only too keen to pose by the pool in the nude. I left with a pair of shop-soiled flip-flops for a fiver. They were the last pair and Brian thinks they will be fine after a light Cifing.

Who are these people that buy their swimsuits in March??
Not this lot

Oh, and another thing. John Lewis. That awful menswear department that takes up half the ground floor...
B wanted some summer socks, you know, something pale grey and cotton that would co-ordinate with his white linen suit. They only had thick brown or black wooly ones and were just putting out the thermals. Peak!!
